How to Become a Care and Support Worker for Candlelight Care: A Step-by-Step Guide

Written by Roxanne Brown for Candlelight Care

At Candlelight Care, we know that being a care support worker is more than just a job – it’s a rewarding career path that allows you to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others. If you’re someone who’s passionate about helping people, has a caring attitude, and is ready to take on the responsibility of providing quality care, for a multi-award-winning company, a career with us could be a perfect fit for you. In this guide, I’ll take you through the step-by-step process of becoming part of the Candlelight family, covering everything from the potential qualifications and certifications needed, to the essential qualities and skills that make a great caregiver.

Step 1: Understand the role of a Care Support Worker in domiciliary care

Before diving into the training and qualifications, it’s important to understand what a Care Support Worker in domiciliary care does. Home care provides support for individuals who may be elderly, disabled, or living with chronic conditions. Our teams of care support workers help them maintain their independence in the comfort of their own homes. The role involves a variety of responsibilities, which can include:

  • Personal care: helping with everyday activities, such as washing, dressing, and using the bathroom.
  • Companionship: providing emotional support, engaging in conversation, and helping them avoid feelings of loneliness or isolation by accompanying them to appointments or days out.
  • Assistance with mobility: helping clients move around the home safely, whether it’s walking, transferring from one place to another, or using mobility aids.
  • Medication management: assisting clients with taking their prescribed medications and ensuring they follow their medication schedules accurately.
  • Household assistance: performing light housekeeping duties like cleaning, meal preparation, and laundry.
  • Health monitoring: observing changes in health and communicating any concerns with our office teams, client family members or healthcare professionals, where appropriate.

A caregiver’s job is emotionally rewarding but can also be physically and mentally demanding. Patience, empathy, and a willingness to learn are key to succeeding in this career.

Step 2: Meet basic requirements

In the UK, there are a few essential steps to follow to become a care support worker. While formal education is not always required, certain basic qualifications and skills will set you up for success.

  • Minimum age: in most cases, you must be at least 18 years old to work as a caregiver.
  • Right to work in the UK: you must have the legal right to work in the UK, whether you’re a citizen or have the necessary work visa.
  • Clear criminal record: because home caregivers work closely with vulnerable individuals, a criminal background check (DBS check) is required for all caregivers in the UK. This ensures that caregivers are trustworthy and safe to work with clients.
  • Good communication skills: as a caregiver, you’ll be interacting with clients, their families, and other healthcare professionals regularly, so strong communication skills are essential.

Step 3: Qualifications and certifications

While there’s no single educational path to becoming a caregiver, there are qualifications and certifications that can enhance your skills, improve your employability, and provide you with the knowledge to offer the best care. However, you do not need to already have these qualifications when you join, as full training is given to all of our care support workers.

  • Care Certificate: the Care Certificate is a set of standards that define the knowledge, skills, and behaviours required to work in adult social care. It’s often the first step for new caregivers and covers topics like communication, infection control, and safeguarding. You will complete this within the first 3 months of starting your role with us, unless you’ve done it before, elsewhere.
  • Health and Social Care qualifications: many caregivers in the UK choose to pursue Level 2 or Level 3 qualifications in Health and Social Care. These qualifications provide deeper knowledge about providing care in different settings, understanding health conditions, and developing skills to work with diverse populations. You do not need to have these before you join us though, but should you be interested in obtaining a qualification you can reach out to your branch manager and the training department.

At Candlelight Care, we provide full induction training and ongoing professional development, ensuring our team has the support they need to grow in their careers.

Step 4: Develop essential skills and qualities

While qualifications and certifications are important, it’s equally essential to develop certain personal qualities and skills that will make you an outstanding care support worker. Home care is a hands-on, people-focused career, and the qualities you bring to the role are just as important as any certificate.

Key qualities and skills of a great Care Support Worker:

  • Compassion and empathy: the ability to understand and share the feelings of another person is essential in this role. As a care support worker, you’ll be providing support to vulnerable individuals, so a compassionate, empathetic nature will help you connect with your clients on a deeper level.
  • Patience: caregiving requires patience, as some clients may need more time to complete tasks or express themselves. Being able to remain calm and patient, especially in difficult situations, is a key trait.
  • Reliability and trustworthiness: your clients will rely on you to be dependable, punctual, and trustworthy. Building strong relationships with clients and their families is based on the confidence they have in your reliability.
  • Communication skills: being able to clearly and effectively communicate is essential for care support workers, both when interacting with clients and when reporting concerns to the office team or healthcare professionals.
  • Adaptability: every client is different, and their needs may change over time. A great caregiver must be flexible and adaptable, willing to adjust to new care plans as needed to ensure the best support.
  • Time management: you will be visiting multiple clients on every shift, each with their own unique needs. Being able to prioritise tasks and manage your time effectively is crucial.
  • Problem-solving: from addressing an unexpected medical issue to helping a client with a personal matter, our best candidates have strong problem-solving skills to think quickly and act appropriately.
  • Attention to detail: whether it’s following a medication schedule or noticing changes in a client’s health, paying attention to the small details is essential to providing the highest level of care.

Step 5: Apply for jobs

Many people begin their careers as a support worker or a care assistant in a care home, gaining valuable on-the-job experience while continuing to develop their qualifications. Others may have simply cared for loved ones before and want to use those transferable skills in an employment setting.

When looking for a role in home care, my best advice is to:

  • Research employers: look for companies that align with your values and offer the type of care you’re passionate about providing. At Candlelight Care, we pride ourselves on fostering a supportive work environment with excellent training opportunities.
  • Prepare for interviews: be ready to discuss your skills, experience, and motivations for wanting to work in home care. Highlight your qualifications, qualities, and compassion you bring to the role. Enthusiasm and a smiling face are always a winner for me.
  • Stay committed to learning: home care is an ever-evolving field, so it’s important to continue developing your skills and knowledge. This will not only help you grow as an individual but also open up more opportunities for career advancement.
