Acquired Brain Injury

What is an acquired brain injury?

An acquired brain injury, often called an ABI, is any injury to the brain that happens after birth. It can be caused by a range of events, including falls, road traffic accidents, sports injuries, tumours, infections, haemorrhages or strokes.

ABIs can affect anyone, at any age, and the impact can vary from person to person. Depending on the location and severity of the injury, an ABI may affect how someone moves, thinks, communicates or manages their emotions. Some effects may be short term, while others can be longer lasting.

Common acquired brain injury symptoms (ranging mild to severe):

  • Concussion
  • Brief loss of consciousness (just a few seconds or minutes)
  • Dizziness or trouble keeping their balance
  • Memory or concentration difficulties
  • Headaches
  • Changes in mood or sleep patterns
  • Increased sensitivity to light or sound
  • Profound confusion or agitation
  • Slurred speech
  • Convulsions
  • Changes in pupil size
  • Difficulty coordinating movements
  • Loss of control over bodily functions
  • Worsening headaches or episodes of nausea and vomiting

An acquired brain injury can sometimes also affect emotional wellbeing, which may lead to feelings of anxiety or depression, or reactions that feel unusual or out of character. We understand that these changes can be challenging both for the person affected and for those close to them. Our trained teams are here to provide compassionate, practical support for the whole family throughout this journey.
