Arthritis and Osteoporosis
What is arthritis and osteoporosis?
Arthritis is a condition that causes pain, swelling and stiffness in one or more joints, and is the most common joint condition in the UK. Osteoporosis weakens bones, making them more fragile and more likely to break, and often has no obvious symptoms until a fracture occurs.
Both conditions can affect anyone, though they become more common with age. With the right treatment, lifestyle advice and practical support, many people continue to live active, independent lives.
Common types of arthritis
- Osteoarthritis – often affects weight-bearing joints such as the knees and feet
- Gout – often affects the big toe joint, causing pain, swelling and heat
- Rheumatoid arthritis – usually first felt in the small joints of the hands and feet
- Ankylosing spondylitis – causes lower back pain and stiffness lasting longer than common backache
- Psoriatic arthritis – joint pain and swelling alongside a scaly rash
- Juvenile idiopathic arthritis – affects children under 16
