Autism
What is autism?
Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), is a lifelong difference in the way the brain develops. It affects how a person experiences and interacts with the world, and is often described as a form of neurodivergence.
Autistic people may experience differences in communication, social interaction and how they process information, along with heightened or reduced sensitivity to light, sound, smells, tastes and touch. Autism is present from birth and is not an illness, so it does not need to be cured, though the right understanding and support helps autistic people thrive.
More than 1 in 100 people are autistic, with an estimated 700,000 autistic adults and children in the UK. Every autistic person is unique, so support is always tailored to the individual.
