Bariatrics

What is bariatric care?

Bariatric care provides specialist support for people living with obesity or recovering from bariatric (weight-loss) surgery. It focuses on helping you live safely, comfortably and independently, while supporting healthy lifestyle changes in a compassionate, non-judgemental way.

In health and social care, bariatric care often refers to the specialist care and equipment needed to support people who weigh 25 stone (159kg) or more. Needing this kind of support can feel difficult to talk about, but with the right care, people can continue to live safely and with dignity.

How obesity can affect your health

  • Reduced mobility and difficulty with everyday tasks
  • Breathlessness and fatigue
  • Joint or back pain
  • Increased risk of skin irritation and infections
  • Increased risk of conditions such as type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure
