Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease

What is dementia?

Dementia is an umbrella term for a group of conditions that affect how the brain works, causing a gradual decline in memory, thinking, communication and the ability to carry out everyday tasks.

Alzheimer’s disease is the most common type of dementia, while vascular dementia is the second most common. Dementia is a progressive condition, so symptoms usually become more severe over time, though the rate varies from person to person.
