Diabetes

What is diabetes?

Diabetes is a long-term condition that causes the level of glucose (sugar) in your blood to become too high, because your body either does not produce enough insulin or cannot use it effectively.

The two most common types are Type 1, an autoimmune condition often diagnosed in childhood or early adulthood, and Type 2, which develops when the body does not use insulin effectively and can sometimes be managed through lifestyle changes. If not well managed, diabetes can increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, nerve damage and vision loss.
