Stroke

What is a stroke?

A stroke happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted, causing damage to brain cells. The effects vary from person to person, depending on which part of the brain has been affected and how quickly treatment was received.

For some people, recovery happens quickly. Others may experience longer-term changes affecting movement, communication, memory or everyday activities. Common challenges can include:

  • Reduced mobility or weakness on one side of the body
  • Difficulty with balance and coordination
  • Fatigue and reduced stamina
  • Problems with speech, language or communication
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Changes in memory, concentration or thinking
  • Emotional changes such as anxiety or low mood
